Now, I saw Wallows for the first time on their last tour, the Model tour, and I had never experienced post concert depression as bad as what I dealt with after the shows I attended. Luckily enough for me, they didn’t wait long to announce the Model & More tour, with multiple dates in my area! The plans were put into motion and my friends and I prepared to attend their NJ, NY, and RI shows.
Wallows brought along Deb Never for their first leg of the Model & More tour and they were an immediate fan favorite. Their band and them brought an energy to the stage that you couldn’t tear your attention away from. The majority of their set consisted of unreleased songs, such as Blue, Out of Your Mind, Somebody New, Do You Like Arcades?, and Know Me Better, which I’m waiting on the edge of my seat for to be released on streaming! Before seeing them live, I dug into their music a bit to get to know some songs and was very happy to see that Momentary Sweetheart was on the set, as that is easily one of my favorite songs. Deb Never killed their set and I can’t wait to see them again in the future.
If there’s one thing you can rely on with Wallows, it’s that you could go to ten shows in a row and not a single setlist would be the same. Their show at The Paramount in Huntington, NY was an absolutely insane set, and I fully believe my friends and I manifested it. They opened with the upbeat, scream-your-heart-out-with-your-best-friends type song, Anytime, Always, and then gave the fans the perfect transition into Scrawny. These two upbeat songs back to back make you wonder if you should start doing more cardio with the way you're already out of breath and still have a full set to go!
They pulled out multiple rare fan favorites throughout the show, including Sun Tan, with the iconic ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ outro by One Direction, as well as Treacherous Doctor and Pictures of Girls. Wallows also played a brand new, unreleased song ‘Hide It Away’ off of their upcoming EP, More, which is set to be released on March 28th. While I hardly know any of the words, It has been on a constant loop in my head and I need it on streaming services ASAP. They also played ‘Your New Favorite Song’, which took on a whole new life when performed live. Wallows will somehow always take a song and make it even better live, which is truly what makes their performances so special.
Once Wallows started to get near the end of their set, which they introduce with Pleaser, that’s when you really regret not spending more time on the treadmill. Pleaser still remaining a staple on their setlist when it was their first single they ever released is more impressive than I think people realize and it’s a testament to how Wallows have never released a bad song! The insanity that is Remember When follows shortly afterwards and when Dylan asks the crowd to give the rest of their energy for the rest of the set, the crowd does exactly what he says. The transition that follows, from Remember When into I Don’t Want To Talk is easily one of the best I’ve heard in general and I will never, ever get tired of hearing it.
When Wallows left the stage and the crowd chanted for ‘one more song’, my friends and I took a much needed sit down with the short amount of time we had before they came back. We passed around a water bottle like it was the only thing that could save us (honestly, it was) and took deep breaths in preparation for the encore. Wallows came back after several chants from the crowd and played their hit song, Are You Bored Yet?, handing Clairo’s verse over to the crowd to sing, where we totally sounded just like her! As I said before, you can never expect the same set from Wallows, and that stood true tonight as well as they pulled out Only Friend as their closer, which left fans in hysterics over getting such a rare song. My friend had been saying all week how she wants to hear that song live more than anything, so, safe to say, she was practically brought to her knees.
If you have not seen Wallows, if you are on the fence about seeing them on any of their upcoming dates, or even if you don’t know every song and aren’t sure if you should go, I’m telling you now; GO! The energy from the band themselves as well as the crowd is electrifying and even if, for some reason, you might not have the energy before, you’ll be infected by it the moment they take the stage.
Wallows will be ending this winter tour run for the Model & More tour on Monday, February 24th in Fort Lauderdale, FL at the War Memorial Auditorium and then picking back up on May 9th in Mexico City at the Pepsi Center WTC, with a multitude of more dates following. And, yes, I will be in attendance again as they will be returning to the northern east coast! I cannot wait to hear more of the songs off of More live and can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves.
