I certainly did get charmed at Clairo’s ‘Charm Tour’ on October 30th, to say the least. I was extra excited for this concert for two reasons; one being that I got to dress up, since it was a Halloween concert! And who else could I have possibly dressed up as besides the woman of the hour herself; Clairo! The second reason; I got a photo pass! My first time! Alice’s publicist approved me the day before the show and I was absolutely over the moon. That night, I made my cat, Kyoko, act as a model for me so I could experiment with my Canon camera, since I’d only been able to use my point and shoot up to that point. She was a fantastic model, by the way.
When Clairo announced the Charm Tour, I knew I had to attend. Not only because it was Clairo, but because she also had Alice Phoebe Lou as her opener, who I’d actually been listening to a bit, so it was a perfect lineup! Alice and her band came out in their costumes, which were all fantastic by the way, even though Alice said her costume was a last minute situation, the skeleton dress was a 10/10. The moment she started to sing, I felt goosebumps over my entire body and it felt as though my bones were vibrating from the power in her voice. She has such a strong and soulful voice, which you can already hear in her music, but it’s conveyed even more-so with her live performance. The crowd swayed along with her magic essence and set the perfect scene for the woman of the night; Clairo.
Clairo’s new album, Charm, which is the one she was touring for, was absolutely my favorite album of hers, so I was ecstatic to see her performing the songs from this album. She has released a few live versions of her songs on her Spotify and I always prefer those over the studio versions (nothing against the studio versions!), so I knew she and her band were going to put on an ethereal performance. Not only was I right, they even exceeded my expectations. The intro to the show involved Clairo and her bandmates, who were also all dressed up for Halloween, coming onto the stage and sharing glasses of wine while ‘After Laughter (Comes Tears)’ by Wendy Rene played and it was absolutely the cutest intro I’d seen for a concert. A lot of her band would switch between instruments as well during the show, which was such a cool aspect to showcase their talents as well as add to each of the songs.
As Clairo came to the end of the last song, ‘Juna’, her mic unfortunately cut out, so the crowd proceeded to fill in for her, which was such a cute moment. When she got her mic working, she proceeded to say she would be playing ‘Juna’ again, because, “Fuck it, why not!”, to quote Clairo herself. Hearing ‘Juna’ twice is definitely a peak moment for me considering how good it was live and, most likely, I won’t be hearing it again for quite a long time, as Clairo said herself, before she played ‘Bags’, that this is the last time Boston would be hearing this song for a “long, long time”.
Overall, Clairo and Alice put on a beautiful show from start to finish and I feel so charmed (haha) that I was able to experience a show on this tour. I hope, at some point in the future, I’ll be lucky enough to experience their performance live again. For now, however, I am absolutely satisfied and I wish nothing but the best for these two incredibly talented artists.
